Austin’s Favorite Watering Holes

Austin's favorite watering holes

With the temperatures rising and anticipation for summer activities following suit, it’s the perfect time to start planning where you and your family will be spending the warmer months. Check out some of Austin’s favorite watering holes!

Barton Springs Pool
Just minutes from Downtown Austin, Barton Springs is the perfect place to spend a summer afternoon before grabbing a bite to eat and heading home. With waters that stay a cool 68 degrees and grassy hills that you can sunbathe on comfortably, it’s no wonder it’s been a local favorite for years.

Barton Creek Greenbelt
The Barton Creek Greenbelt is home to several swimming holes, including Gus Fruh Park, Twin Falls, and Sculpture Falls. There are several access points, and with great hiking trails/rock climbing destinations, you can get in a great workout before cooling off in one of the watering holes.

Emma Long Metropolitan Park
Located on the shores of Lake Austin, Emma Long Metropolitan Park has a total of 1150 acres. It features campsites, restrooms, cold showers, a playground, hike and bike trails, and a boat ramp. You can watch the boats pass by while splashing around in the waters with your family.

Hamilton Pool Preserve
With spring water fed by a 45-foot waterfall, a sandy beach, and giant boulders great for laying out in the sun, Hamilton Pool Preserve has been a popular swimming hole since the early 1900s.

Mary Quinlan Park
Nearly six acres of rolling hills with 200 feet of shoreline access make this a great spot to spend the day. It’s not visited as often as other local watering holes, but it does have great amenities like barbecue grills, basketball courts, a boat ramp, and picnic tables. It’s also a great fishing location.

Pedernales Falls State Park
The park is a great place to go camping and has showers, restrooms, hook-ups, and hiking trails. With beautiful waterfalls and deep pools, it’s a great weekend camping spot.

There’s a lot to love about Austin, including the city’s outdoor activities and never-ending list of amenities.
